Becoming Unique:
A Review of Differentiate or Die by Jack Trout
Picture
Too many people now a days try to be alike. Everybody wants to be like someone else because they aren't comfortable with themselves. This often causes them to lose sight in what makes them different from everyone else. Differentiate or Die is written in a business format by Jack Trout. He writes about how companies often lose faith in their products ability to sell so they try to compare it to others. In doing so, they often end up becoming or art least sounding like their competition.Michael Porter makes this well reasoned statement: "cutting prices is usually insanity if the competition can go as low as you can" (Trout 45). He makes this statement basically based on quality. If another competitor has a better reputation that you, people may still choose to purchase their product because it's been proven to be better. Differentiate or Die by Jack Trout teaches readers that being your own person is good. When you separate yourself from the crowd people notice and appreciate it.
I believe success is reached when you do something that you are satisfied with. When nothing else matters, no ones opinions or questions. My goal in life is to to take care of my family as they did for me. I feel as if i owe them what I have and what i may accomplish. My obstacle that is holding me back is hard work, school in particular. I tend to lack when it comes to school work so that could be a big problem in the future. As I read the book it inspired me to work on habits involving lagging. It helped me realize that when you don't put much thought or work into a plan it can and will fall apart.
The book is structured into mini chapters within bigger chapters. Each mini chapter  is on a different aspect of how to differentiate. The beginning and end of the book tie together as it brings back all the keys that may help you separate yourself, in a good way, from the competition. The author makes a lot of effective points throughout the text that may convince someone to try to differentiate themselves from others.
Other than success, this book may teach you a lot of life lessons. It encourages you to be your own person; it reminds of me of an article i read on some Muslim college students. In this story, Muslim students are constantly ridiculed by belligerent people when they attend an all Muslim college. Although they are constantly talked about, the Muslims continue to attend school to different themselves from other non-educate Muslims. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. It can help you with all aspects of becoming successful.
I would also encourage you to read any other literary works by Jack Trout just to see if his information and advise remains helpful. In conclusion, you should only try to be yourself. What makes yo different from everyone else is what makes you unique.

Look into my eyes as I stare at the ground,
Dry me off as the tears run down my face,
Help me up before I fall to my knees.
Love is a painful game we all like to play.

Warmth fills our hearts when we think on the old times we used to have

Shadows then fill our hearts as we think on the present.

The way we treat each other is raw.
We love to leave. And leave to love.

We never know what may happen but we always think we know who we love

We tend to ignore those who care us
And instead go for those who barely notice us.
The things we do for love is painful
We fall so hard we allow our hearts to dangle.
As we dangle in the wind our minds run loose
We must always remember that our minds control our hearts
But we let our hearts overpower our minds

Staring eye to eye while he thinks five moves ahead
Losing is never an option.
As he sweats, it drips on the board like fresh dew
off blades of grass.
He reaches his hand to the piece without looking,
as if he were blindfolded.
Feeling the cold polished wood, he rethinks his move.
As he considers another way,
he undoes the top button of his crisply iron shirt.
AS he picks up the piece he begins to worry
To him this is bigger than a game,
Bigger than him.
This is life.
Wondering over and over again if he's made the right decision.
Losing can't be an option,
Losing isn't an option,
Losing won't be an option.

My heart beating heavily in my chest.
My eagle eyes focused in what was now mine.
Watching it as it walked closer to me.
Glaring at it's shadowed apperence,
While reflecting on all the times before this.
Practing until I couldnt walk the next morning,
Sweating until my clothes weighed more than i did,
Forcing my body through the air like a soaring bullet.
As it touched my hands my mind came back.
All the hard work was finished.
My determination had paid off.
I achieved the top level most will never have the skill to do.

Have people ever told you “Be normal.”? Never listen when they tell you these things. According to Differentiate or Die being “different” is what separates you from everyone else and can help you become successful. The book describes how companies try to compete with each other that they begin to sound alike; instead of remembering their adept ideas that allowed them to succeed.

I enjoy the way the book is written very much. I believe what it is saying is very true. When you begin to try to compete too much, you forget what you are good at and try to follow everyone else. While you are trying to follow everyone else, someone else is improving your ideas and getting credit for them.

The theme of the book is to separate yourself from everyone with your own ideas. Be different. A significant quote that was stated in the book is “Operational effectiveness means you’re running the same race faster, but strategy is choosing to run a different race because it’s the one you’ve set yourself up to win.”. This statement was given by Michael Porter, a Harvard Business School professor, who has observed businesses thrive and fail.

Il Postino contains many themes of love, social class and poetry. It displays these themes when Pablo Neruda becomes close friends with a resident mailman, Mario, in Italy after Neruda is exiled from his hometown, Chile. The movie had its moments when it displayed the themes.

The film displays themes of love when Mario falls for a waitress name Beatrice. Once he falls in love, he then asks Neruda to help him impress Beatrice so he may fall in love with him also. This situation also displays another version of love known as friendship. When Neruda helps Mario get the girl he has heavily fallen in love with without knowing anything about he shows a strong display of friendship.  He helps Mario by writing a love poem to her. He also helped by walking with him along the beach to think of metaphors. Also there is a love for country when Mario makes the recoding for Neruda to display the beautiful things for of his country.

Il Postino doesn’t make strong references towards social classes. They do show Neruda in light clothing and Mario in dark clothing. During this time and in this area most wealthy people would wear light clothing. This was proven true when the only opportunity Mario had for making money was by being a fisherman.

The film makes strong forwards towards poetry. Its first reference towards poetry is when Neruda tells Mario of metaphors. He explains to him that u may make metaphors out of everyday things. He also shows him by taking him to the beach and telling him to watch and describe the water.  Later in the movie he helps Mario create a metaphor by reading a piece of poetry to him and Mario describes how he feels.

My shadow said to me:

what is the matter

Isn't the moon warm

enough for you

why do you need

the blanket of another body

Whose kiss is moss

Around the picnic tables

The bright pink hands held sandwiches

crumbled by distance. Flies crawl

over the sweet instant

You know what is in these blankets

The trees outside are bending with

children shooting guns. Leave

them alone. They are playing

games of their own.

I give water, I give clean crusts

Aren't there enough words

flowing in your veins

to keep you going.
